I based the road in the story on the famous Apache Trail but like Andrew, I’ve never been to Phoenix, although I’d like to go and probably will at some point.  The Trail roughly follows a path through the Superstition Mountains used by the Apache tribe and is so rugged RVs are discouraged from using it.  The scenery is spectacular:
