Between 1763 and 1767, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland to settle a property dispute.  A hundred years later, during the Civil War era, the Mason-Dixon Line became synonymous with the political divide between the North and the South.
